While many people return every year to holiday in Bali, there are always newcomers to the island that may not know too much about it, such as what to expect and where to go. Here are some tips for newcomers to Bali that will help you get the most out of your holiday in this popular tourist destination.
- If you don’t want to buy, don’t ask the price. While this is accepted in Australia, it will only make the Balinese vendors chase you down the street trying to sell you something. It’s better to not even stop or make eye contact unless you are a serious shopper.
- If you want to shop, make sure you are somewhat familiar with Australian prices because these days the prices are not what they were. That said, you can haggle if you want, but do it respectfully.

- Get out of the main drag and find the real Bali. Kuta is not the real Bali. In other areas, such as the world heritage listed rice terraces, there is amazing scenery to be enjoyed.
- Expect heat and humidity. Bali doesn’t have a cold season as such; it’s hot and wet or just hot. By going in our summer you’ll go from hot to hotter; if you go in the winter, you’ll go from cold to hotter. If you explore the more mountainous regions in the summer, you will find relief from the heat and humidity.
- People often go to Bali because of the cheap rates. However, in the Australian school holidays the prices will soar, both in accommodation tariffs and air fares. If you can, avoid the school holidays.
- While many people enjoy staying in a luxurious hotel room, there are other viable options. You could rent a Bali villa with several friends and the cost of accommodation would be very affordable. It gets you out of the mad city rush, too.
- If you are expecting terrific beaches and surf, you could be disappointed. Bali beaches are not nearly as wonderful as Australian beaches and there is nothing much to see when you snorkel. Ungasun is the best beach, but there are strong tides and waves that are likely to dump you, so take care.
- If you plan to visit any of the temples you will need a sarong as your legs must be totally covered whether you are male or female. They can be hired or purchased over there if you don’t have one.
- Plan your itinerary ahead of time and do some research so you know what there is to see. Missing out will disappoint you. That said, no itinerary should be set in stone – you are on holidays, after all.
