Axe throwing is fast becoming a hugely popular pastime, and for many, it is a competitive sport which they participate in with the view to winning trophies. If you have never tried it, then you should, and if you are concerned that you do not know the first thing about throwing an axe then rest easy.
At each axe throwing centre there will be instructors who will show how to throw it, and just in case you are wondering everything is done with the utmost attention paid to safety.
If you have already had a go at axe throwing and are wondering how you can improve your skills, read on as we have some tips that can help you get closer to the centre of those target boards every time you throw.
Tip #1: Practice
‘Well, duh’, you might be saying but it is amazing how people who wish to improve a skill do not practice enough, or even at all. It does not matter whether you want to improve axe throwing, your golf stroke, or your French phrases, you need to practice regularly. Many axe throwing centres offer classes so if you want to accelerate your improvement sign up for one.
In the 1980s, the sport of snooker was dominated by Steve Davis who won a total of 6 world championships, and he was once asked, ‘Steve, why do think you are so good at snooker?’. Steve Davis’s answer was ‘It’s funny…the more I practice, the better I become’. Consider that your most important lesson.
Tip #2: Ask For Feedback
If you sign up for a class or even go further and get a coach, never be afraid to ask for feedback with regards to your throws. Even if that feedback is somewhat critical, it is better to know you are doing something wrong with your throwing action than to be oblivious to it, and thus never improve.
Your coach presumably wants you to improve so never, ever take their negative feedback to heart. In fact, it should embolden you to strive harder for improvement as you now know where your throwing action is going wrong and what you need to change.
Tip #3 Thrive For A Consistent Throw
Getting to the point where your throw is consistent, and consistently good should be something which you want to achieve. By consistent we are referring to where you stand, the position of your feet, how you grip your axe, and how you take your arm back.
You will note these all take place before you actually release and throw the axe, but they are an essential part of your throwing technique, and the more consistent they are the more consistent your scores will be.
Tip #4 Compete With Others
Even if you do not yet consider yourself to be an expert axe thrower, the quicker you compete with others, the sooner you will start to improve. The mental aspect of wanting to prove yourself against another person has an amazing effect on your physiology and ultimately how well you throw an axe. Axe centres have competitions for all levels so enter one as soon as possible.
Tip #5: Enjoy Yourself!
It is often underestimated how much enjoying something spurs you on to improve what you are doing and that applies equally to axe throwing. It is there to be enjoyed so do so, and even if you know you will never become world champion, it does not stop you having fun whilst trying to throw like one.
