Anyone who has ever worked in, studied, or used digital marketing, will know that it is a subject that evolves at an exceptionally rapid pace. A prime example of that is Google Updates, where, overnight, the rules relating to SEO and ranking websites are turned on their head.
In digital marketing new concepts appear constantly, and one which is attracting a huge amount of interest is the metaverse. You may be aware that Mark Zuckerberg is changing Facebook’s branding to Meta, however, the metaverse is a concept that goes beyond just Facebook.
The metaverse is said to be what the future of the internet will become and that is virtual reality. Not only is Facebook embracing this to build a virtual reality social platform, but others are too. Roblox, an online gaming platform, plans to facilitate user-generated virtual reality games, and Epic Games is purchasing companies with the technology to augment its virtual reality gaming plans.
In effect, the metaverse is said to be the realm where you will have a digital ‘life’ that runs parallel to your physical world. You will have an avatar that lives in this virtual world where you can interact with others, be entertained, make purchases, and do many tasks that you can currently do online, but you would do so whilst immersed in virtual reality.
It might sound like something you might see in a sci-fi movie, but the reality is (no pun intended) the technology to create this virtual world is either already in existence or soon will be, and with the likes of Facebook already behind its creation, it is sure to come ever closer. What this also means is that a huge number of opportunities for employment relating to digital marketing will be created. Examples of these are as follows:
Metaverse Content
Many digital marketing campaigns involve stories and thus in the metaverse the ability to tell exciting, unique, and inspiring stories relating to a brand, product, or service will be in as high demand as those effective at content creation and marketing are now.
Within the metaverse and its extended reality, there really will be no limit as to how stories and content are relayed, with those consuming it able to be fully immersed in them to the extent of walking through a virtual checkout with a product in their hand.
Metaverse Creation
This type of employment in the metaverse relates more closely to the infrastructure and the ability to conceive and create the innovations, platforms, concepts, and technologies necessary to create virtual realities. This might be akin to the software developers and website designers of today.
This could be split between those who conceive the ideas and those who use their technical knowledge to create what those concepts are within the metaverse. Specific roles include metaverse developers and 3D designers.
Metaverse Community Management
This role would be akin to the roles that social media managers play today. They would act as a conduit between the metaverse users and the brand to ensure that anything that the brand has created in the metaverse is engaging, innovative, and most importantly, meeting the expectations of consumers.
One way this could be played out would be for the community manager to be a virtual tour guide with their avatar showing the avatars of users around a property, demonstrating products, and offering a personalised experience within the metaverse for each one of them.
